Imphal, April 11 2011:
Taking serious note of the fast degenerating condition of Government schools in the State, Andro AC MLA Th Shyamkumar and Eduction Director W Rajen accompanied by a media team inspected Government schools located within Andro Assembly constituency yesterday.
The team visited Government schools located at Poiroukhongjil, Nongpok Keithelmanbi and Huikap.
Even as these schools commenced their academic session in March, the students were facing serious difficulties due to unavailability of text books.
Unlike many other schools of the State where there are very few students, these schools located within Andro AC have students to full capacity.
With the existing infrastructure like buildings falling far short of the requirements, students are being taught in local clubs or extension rooms built by the local people at their own expense.
The visiting team found students learning inside class rooms walled by bamboo.
Moreover, many of these schools were hiring private teachers at nominal salaries as the existing number of Government teachers was quite low compared to the strength of students.
Headmasters of these schools said that large number of students came for admission to their schools since the last three/four years.
However, all these students could not be accommodated on account of the inadequate infrastructure and shortage of teaching staff.
They appealed to the MLA and the Education Director to look into these shortages and do the needful in the interest of students.
Later speaking to media persons after the inspection tour, MLA Shyamkumar said that the authority's inability to provide text books in time has been seriously impeding implementation of the Right to Education Act, because causing undue headache to students.
He also demanded that the concerned authority should make it clear whether or not they would be able to provide the text books in time.
Education Director W Rajen said that he was overjoyed to see healthy attendance of students at schools within Andro AC while many Government schools located elsewhere are on the verge of complete break-down.
Saying that he would highlight the grievances of these schools to the higher authority, Rajen assured that school uniforms, sports materials and stationery items would be provided to students of these schools within a couple of days.
