'Promoting mathematical science need of the hour'

A two-day long National seminar on "Advances in Mathematical Sciences" began today at the premises of DM College of Science, Imphal.
The seminar is organised by Department of Mathematics, DM College of Science under the sponsorship of Department of Higher & Technical Education, Government of Manipur.
The inaugural function was graced by H Deleep Singh, Commissioner of Higher & Technical Education as chief guest; Dr N Ibotombi Singh, Principal, DM College of Science as president; Professor M Ranjit Singh, Department of Mathematics, Manipur University; Professor Kuntalapatra, Department of Mathematics, Gauhati University and Professor Manjusri Basu as guests of honour.

Speaking at the function, Deleep asserted that promotion of mathematical science in the State has become the need of the hour and added that the promotion task should be done by the teachers and professors of mathematics although the concerned administrators can assist in the endeavour.
He stated that one who do well in mathematics and English have many advantageous in academic career and can even shift to many disciplines of science in higher education.
He noted that the way of teaching and learning method is quite important in education and one needs to know the broad context of a subject as the present age is a world of specialization.
However, there seems to be something wrong in balancing academic career as many people who pursue higher studies or earn higher degrees cannot teach different subjects of lower classes other than their specialized subjects, he observed.
He advocated that one who completed graduation must be able to teach different subjects of lower classes.
Pointing out that many students show less interest in mathematics in the present days, Deleep opined that students may pursue mathematics in their academic career if they are groomed with proper knowledge of the subject in their early education.
He maintained that one cannot blame the society or Government for less number of students pursuing mathematics.
As such, professors and teachers of mathematics should find an appropriate way to make students pursue the subject, he added.
Taking part in the function as one of the guests of honour, retired HOD of Mathematics Department, DM College of Science, H Jayantakumar stated that mathematics is required for gaining knowledge of all trades therefore one must have at least the basic knowledge of it.
He defined mathematics as a subject that is subtle, interesting and enjoyable.
He stated that the growing trend of tuition culture in the State suppressed the potential of children thereby making them unexplored.
Professor Kuntalapatra noted that mathematics develops rational and logistic thinking and urged all the mathematic students to exchange their thoughts and ideas to enhance their skills.
Professor M Ranjit underscored the need to motivate students to learn mathematics and make them feel the sensual gratification of learning the subject in order to promote it.
Around 70 delegates are participating in the seminar wherein 20 mathematicians/ experts will present papers.
