Imphal, October 18 2010:
Asserting that industry is the way to development, MPP's O Joy today lamented that in India's 62 year old economic policy, there is no plan for setting up even a single industry in Manipur.
The veteran MPP leader was speaking as chief guest in a seminar on the first session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly 1948 organised by the MPP at its office today.
He recalled that Manipur was merged with the Indian Union and stressed the need to know and understand the first Assembly which was held in 1948 after the merger and to asses the development that has been brought about since the merger Manipur to the Indian Union.
There is not even a shoe factory set up by the Central government even though Central government is taking up developmental works in other regions in a huge way under its five-year plans.
In the first five-year, the plan outlay of the state was fixed at Rs 1.75 crore only for taking up developmental work in the entire state in five years.
Observing that Central government has been allocating only meager funds for development in the state, he said not a single long term plan for development of the state has been taken up.
With not a single plan to establish any sort of industry included, many educated youths remain unemployed.
On the other hand, this can also be taken as a weakness of the state government.
In this regard, it can be said that there no worthy leader has been born to run the government in the state, he asserted.
MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang presided the opening function of the seminar.
Former speaker, L Jatra attended as guest of honour.
