Arrested women vendors released

Imphal, May 19 2011:
Authority today released 21 women street vendors who had been in jail after they were arrested by the police during a series of agitations launched by them against the government's move to evict unlicensed street vendors.
They were released on PR (Personal Recognizance) Bond.
Members of the Khwairamband Bazar Vendors Nupi Yaipha Lup received them in a function held at the MPP office.
Speaking at the reception function, MPP president Nimaichand Luwang flayed the government's street eviction drive and said the move is tantamount to snatching the livelihood of the vendors.
Street vendors are in every city in the country, even in New Delhi.
There should be a place for the street vendors in a city like Imphal.
Government should provide them a space, he asserted.
MPP had strongly condemned the detention of street vendors.
President of the MPP's Chanura Marup, O Thoibi, its working president, Shija Kunjeshwori and secretary of Khwairamband Bazar Vendors Nupi Yaipha Lup, Th Subashini were among others who attended the reception function held this afternoon.
