AR convoy rescue SDO from attack, police disperse mob

Ukhrul, February 17 2020:
Bandh supporters of Mapithel Dam-Affected Headmen Chiefs and Elders Organisation (MDAHCEO) today destroyed a vehicle of Jessami SDO at around 2.30 pm near Mahadev under Litan Police Station, Ukhrul while he was heading towards Ukhrul from Imphal.
According to this correspondent, the gypsy of SDO Kachamthai Faiga Gangmei, who is also an AC to DC, Ukhrul, was destroyed by a group of youths after crossing Mahadev.
According to the source, the SDO talked with the chiefs and elders at the site for a brief period and later identified himself as a Government official.

After the SDO left the site and was at an isolated location, volunteers of MDAHCEO started shooting sling and hurled stone to the vehicle.
Though the SDO and the driver were unhurt, the front and rear windshields of Gypsy were destroyed.
Reportedly, broken glasses of other vehicles were also seen on the site.
Later, the SDO and his driver were rescuedfrom the spot by a convoy of Assam Rifles.
After the incident, Ukhrul police rushed to the spot and dispersed the mob at Shikiphing junction and even fired some rounds of tear gas shells.
Reports of filing FIR at the Police Station is not yet received till the filing of this report.
It might be mentioned that Mapithel Dam-Affected Headmen Chiefs and Elders Organisation (MDAHCEO) has announced a 48-hour total shutdown along Imphal-Ukhrul road from midnight of February 16 in protest against the authorities for allegedly neglecting their long-pending demands of providing rehabilitation and resettlement.
Mapithel Dam constructed over Thoubal was commissioned in 2018, but, the assurance given by the State Government for providing rehabilitation and resettlement to the affected villagers is yet to be materialised.
