Education Minister chairs meeting with college Principals, representatives of student bodies

Education Minister Dr Thokchom Radheshyam along with Commissioner, Higher Education & Technical Education, M Harekrishna held a meeting with college Principals and representatives of student organizations at the SCERT, Multipurpose Hall, Lamphelpat today.
Organised by the Higher Education & Technical Education, the meeting discussed reopening of colleges, undergraduate and postgraduate examinations, college admission for the academic year, 2020-21, admission fee structures, college intake capacity and other miscellaneous issues.
Dr Th Radheshyam said that the meeting was convened to discuss and develop a preparatory plan so that necessary measures can be taken up in view of the reopening of colleges once the lockdown imposed by the Government is relaxed.
While the primary focus is maintaining the quality of education, it is imperative that the infrastructure of educational institutions are improved to facilitate the students who have returned from other States due to COVID-19, he said.
He sought suggestions and opinions on the best option to increase the intake capacity of the colleges to accommodate the students who have come back from other States, if they desire to pursue their higher studies here.
Once the lockdown restrictions are lifted, the Education Department will be facing tremendous pressure.
A survey on the higher educational institutions in the State is also underway to assess the status, infrastructure and facilities, he said, appealing all participants to communicate and collaborate to find the best solutions and devise plans that can navigate the education sector amid COVID-19 pandemic.
About 45 college Principals, representatives of student bodies such as DESAM (Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur), AMSU (All Manipur Students' Union), MSF (Manipuri Students' Federation), SUK (Students' Union of Kangleipak), AIMS (Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpanglup), KSA (Kangleipak Students' Association), ANSAM (All Naga Students' Association, Manipur) and KSO (Kuki Students' Organisation) took part in the meeting.
The meeting was also attended by Director, Higher Education & Technical Education, Kh Diana Devi, Director, SCERT, Dr M Meenakumari Devi and other officials of the department.
