Imphal, March 27 2018:
Women and Youth Development Trust has urged the State Government to create a market shed for the women vendors who used to sell goods in the market shed situated between Kasturi Bridge and Babuthong, before it was dismantled by the authority.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, Women and Youth Development Trust managing director Oinam Milan alleged that today morning, Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) Councillors L Arenkumar and Th Pumachandra informed the women vendors that the place where they set up shops will be dismantled for the creation of a vehicle parking space and the vendors would not be allowed to sell goods at the area from March 31.Milan questioned if the Councillors acted after proper approval from the IMC Mayor and asked why the women vendors are being chased away from the area.
Speaking to media persons, Khwai Nagamapal Trustee and Youths Vendors Welfare Union president Lamabam (o) Somola informed that before 2011, there used to be a market shed between Kasturi Bridge and Babuthong.
She said that the women vendors do not have any qualms regarding the construction of a vehicle parking space in the said area but urged the authority concerned to provide a proper market shed/place for the affected women vendors.
She further explained that after the earlier market shed was dismantled some of the vendors shifted to Lamphel while others shifted to temporary market shed and the remaining women vendors had to sell their products on the roadside.
On the other hand, the secretary of the union, Akoijam Pratima said that the union will not accept any attempts to add extra vendors to the new market shed number 3, over the already existing licensed vendors.
She also demanded the IMC to clarify whether it approved the opening of the new wholesale shop near the stairs of new market number 3, within three days.
