House condemns attacks on NE people

Along pressing the Government of India to enact a stringent anti-racism law, Manipur Legislative Assembly has strongly condemned the incidents of racial attacks on people from the Northeast in other parts of the country.
A resolution to this effect was taken during the second sitting of 7th Session of 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly today.
MLA Th Shyamkumar and MLA RK Imo raised a calling attention motion in the House on the issue of crimes and discrimination faced by the people hailing from the Northeast in New Delhi.
However, the calling attention motion was later converted into a short duration discussion in view of the seriousness of the issue.
Raising the calling attention motion, Shyamkumar highlighted several incidents of attacks and discriminations on the Northeast people in New Delhi including the death of Nido Tania, rape and assault on Manipuri people.
The MLA condemned the incidents in the strongest term.
Taking part in the short duration discussion, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi said that the State Government has been pressing the Centre to take up precautionary measures to prevent attacks on the Northeast people in New Delhi.
A helpline would also be opened at Manipur Bhawan in association with Delhi Police soon, he noted.
Dy Chief Minister Gaikhangam also stated that the Government would ensure safety of Northeast people in the National Capital.
Proper measures would be taken up after the high level committee, which has been set up to look into the problems faced by the people of Northeast in New Delhi, submits its report to the Central Government.
Legislators from both the benches of the House took part in the discussion highlighting the woes and problems faced by the Northeast people in New Delhi.
