Imphal, July 18 2012:
Giving a severe blow to the fate of Manipuri cinemas, Manipuri Film Development Corporation (MFDC) has been dropped from the list of Corporations in the country due to failure of submitting reports sought by the Centre in time.
The state government was forced to dissolve many corporations in the state as severe deficit in the state budget haunted Manipur.
However, MFDC and some other corporations were spared realising the need to develop Manipuri cinema.
However, failure of submitting the action taken reports and reviews by the state government has led to dropping MFDC from the list of Corporations.
According to a reliable source, the information about dropping of MFDC from the list of Corporations was conveyed to the state government by the Registrar of Corporation in April this year.
The main reasons behind the dropping MFDC from the list have been cited as failure of appointing Secretary and submission of reports regarding revenue, finance and other official records on time.
In this regard, a meeting of the members of MFDC chaired by Chief Minister O Ibobi Sing, who is also its Chairman, was held in second week of July.
The meeting resolved to dissolve MFDC from its status of a corporation and convert it into a society.
Rules and Regulations for handing over MFDC to a Society are being prepared and assessment of the assets underway.
After finalising the RR and assessment of assets, another meeting would be held within this month and the State Cabinet would pass a resolution to hand over MFDC to a Society in July itself.
It is said that there are at present only 15 employees in MFDC and it is being running without any Secretary for the last many years.
Meanwhile, film professionals of the state as well as cinegoers have expressed shocked over the latest development and stated that the fate of Manipuri cinema has become uncertain now.
