Imphal, July 18 2012:
A village defence force (VDF) personnel suffered bullet wound when another VDF jawan on sentry duty at Sagolmang police outpost (POP), under Lamlai police station in Imphal East district, opened fire at around 9.30 pm yesterday.
As per police report, the VDF jawan on sentry duty at the POP gate and identified as Konsam Hemjit (28) s/o of Tharongou of Uyumpok, unleashed a volley of fire last night from his service weapon injuring his colleague Usham Bungbung alias Abung (27) s/o Pakchao of Pukhao.
With a bullet wound on his left abdomen, Bungbung was immediately rushed to the nearby Sagolmang Community Health Centre before being evacuated to Raj Polyclinic, North AOC where is currently under medical observation at the ICU of the private medical centre.
Even though a police source speculated that the firing from the SLR weapon might be accidental, possibility of Hemjit resorting to firing on being provoked by unidentified persons who passed through the POP gate in a car at that opportune moment has also not been ruled out.
It is said that the unidentified persons mocked at the sentry (Hemjit) on whether the weapon he was holding is capable of firing bullets.
Consequent to the firing, a stray bullet might have hit Bungbung who was at a nearby shop across the road, the source maintained.
Nevertheless, Lamlai police have registered a case on the incident and have taken Hemjit and his service weapon into their custody for further investigation.
