Market basements to be converted into parking lots

Taking serious note of the traffic congestion in Imphal city due to parking of vehicles within the city and surrounding areas, the State Government has initiated due process to convert basements of all the three Ima Keithels into parking lots.
Speaking to media persons at the Moirangkhom premises of DIPR today, MAHUD Director and Chief Town Planner N Geetkumar said that the parking lots which would constructed at the basements of the two Ima Keithels located to the northern side of BT Flyover would be used for parking four wheelers and they would be connected while the basement parking lot of the Ima Keithel located to the southern side of BT Flyover would be reserved for two-wheelers.
Plans are also afoot to construct a parking lot over Naga Nalla on Thangal Keithel side and another basement parking lot in the erstwhile Tombi High School campus.
The Government has also been considering to construct a multi-level parking lot close to the Paona Keithel entrance, at the place where the Electricity Office now stands after shifting the same office elsewhere, Geetkumar said.
After demolishing some of the quarters located on the southern side of Manipur Press Club, multi-level quarters may be constructed there, he said.
In connection with the Go to Village mission, Google Toilet Locator would be launched soon so that anyone can locate public toilets at the 27 towns of the State.
Due process has been initiated to hire IIT Kharagpur for preparing a GIS-based master plan of Imphal city.
Manipur University Economics Department has also been roped in to cany out a comprehensive survey of he street vendors of Imphal city.
A similar arrangement has also been made with MU Anthropology Department to carry out a survey on the number of urban homeless people living in the 27 towns of the State, said the MAHUD Director and Chief Town Planner.
Municipal solid waste management programme would be launched at Andro, Sikhong Sekmai, Heirok, Wangjing, Lamding, Thoubal and Lilong under DoNER Ministry at the cost of Rs 13.52 crore.
Due tender process has been initiated to engage a project management consultant for development Imphal as a smart city.
Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, the Central Government has allocated Rs 180.32 crore for ensuring potable water supply round the clock at Imphal city, Geetkumar said.
