UNC reminds April 10 deadline to Govt

Senapati, April 06 2018: After holding its 'assembly' yesterday the United Naga Council (UNC) said that the "entire situation" will depend on the nature and position of the Government of Manipur on the seven district creation issue when the latter "presents its final stand" on the issue by April 10,2018.The UNC said that if the "final stand" of the State Government of Manipur on the issue does not respect the sentiments of the Naga people then "we will consult the people and start our own course of action" .

In the last tripartite talks held on March 23, it was decided that "the State Government of Manipur will finalise its stand on the UNC demands by April 10, 2018 and will inform the Central Government and the UNC about it".

Another resolution taken during the UNC assembly was that, any agreement or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Government of Manipur and companies without the consent of the Naga people to conduct exploration/extraction of natural resources in 'Naga areas' should be revoked.

"We will not allow any company to extract natural resources in our areas," the UNC resolved.

"The UNC assembly reaffirmed that the presidential council meeting held on February 26, 2018 that any form of extraction, exploration or surveying of minerals and natural resources in Naga areas will be banned", the resolution said.

"In this regard, tribe hohos and frontal organizations are strictly advised to take up all necessary actions with immediate effect," the UNC directed.

The UNC assembly reminded that, as per the decision of the 'Naga Consultative Meet' held on December 12, 2016 at Tahamzam (Senapati) district, the house reaffirmed to out-rightly rej ect the creation of 7 new districts created on December 8,2016.The UNC assembly also reaffirmed "solidly to support" the on-going Indo-Naga political talks and also urged the negotiating parties to take the historic "Indo-Naga Framework Agreement" to its logical conclusion at the earliest "based on the unique history of the Nagas and its situation" .

The UNC assembly further resolved to impress the Governor of Manipur not to give assent to the "controversial 'The Manipur Agriculture Produce and Livestock Marketing (Promotion and Facilitation) 2018 passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on February 23, 2018'".If also resolved that "elected Naga representatives should practically uphold, defend and safeguard our land, identity, history and legitimate rights" .

Finally, the UNC assembly said that, in view of creating peace and harmony in the region, the "UNC assembly decided to maintain and strengthen cordial relationship with all neighbouring communities" .

The UNC assembly was held at Thangal Surung Naga village, Senapati district on April 5.It was attended by Naga frontal organizations and public leaders.
