Imphal, February 25 2017:
The price of rice grains distributed under the National Food Security Act, which was implemented in order to ensure availability of rice to the poor people at cheap prices, may climb up from April.
According to a source inside Manipur Government's Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution (CAF&PD), a new revised rate of rice grain under the National Food Security Act will take effect from the month of April.
Under the National Food Security Act, rice is distributed at Rs 3 per Kg.
Although the Act was implemented Nationwide from 2013, the State Government implemented the Act in the State only from April 25 last year.
Under the Act, 35 kilograms of rice are distributed to those households falling under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) at Rs 3 per Kg and 5 kilograms of rice are distributed to each and every member of a priority household every month.
The source pointed out that as the Act is nearing its three year cycle, a new rate for rice would be revised by March and the new rate would most likely be put into effect from the month of April.
The Government bears a huge cost in providing the rice grains at such a low rate to the poor people.
Rice normally sells for more than Rs 30 per Kg in the market.
The revised rate of rice grain distributed under the National Food Security Act may climb upto Rs 10 per Kg, it added.
