11th Shumang Leela Day celebrated

Mangsatabam Ningthem Singh was awarded the Iboyaima Award 2011 while columnist of The Sangai Express, Nomita Khongbantabam was awarded Iboyaima Scholarship for one year.
The were conferred the awards today during the 11th Shumang Leela Day celebration held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound under the aegis of Manipur State Shumang Leela Council.
The function was attended by Manipur Assembly Speaker Th Lokeshore, MLA K Ranjit and Commissioner of Manipur Art and Culture department, RK Nimai as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Recipient of 11th Thokchom Iboyaima Award, M Ningthem, who hails from Luwangsangbam Makha Leikai had a foray into art world in a young age.
To his credit, he had performed in around 82 spectacular plays that shoot him to prominence.
At 77, Ningthem is still active and he is popularly known as Joy Lakhsmi in the theatre world.
He had acted in some prominent plays like Laman Khumba, Sugnu Loi Thaba, Mahakna su pita onba, Numit kappa, Sanagi Murti, High School, Rickshaw kanano, Amangba Nong, Achoiba Lei, Morning Star, et al .
The award carries Rs 10,000, a shawl and a certificate.
Columnist of The Sangai Express (Manipuri), Nomita Khongbantabam was awarded Iboyaima Scholarship to acknowledge her contributions towards the advancement of Shumang Leela (Street Play) in the State and to encourage her for more contribution towards the perfection of the art form.
Speaking at the occasion, RK Nimai said that the Art and Culture department would exert maximum effort for improvement of Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen.
Paying of tribute to the departed souls of individuals who contributed towards the advancement of Shumang leela in the State also marked the occasion.
