Imphal, April 01 2012:
Strongly condemning the actions of Delhi Police in questioning the identity and nationalities of the North Easterners even to the extent of asking them to produce their passport, the Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress Committee (MPTCC) has demanded action against the Delhi Police to mend the hurt feelings of the NE people.
In a statement, General Secretary (Admin) of MPTC, Y Iboyaima said the 'uncalled for' action of the Delhi Police is unprecedented and utter disrespect to the people of the North East who have Mongoloid features.
Quoting media reports of the incident, the statement maintained that it was disheartening that citizens from the North East are treated as foreigners in their own country.
"This will further alienate the psyche of the North East people who are no less patriotic and nationalist than their fellow Indians belonging to other regions," the MPTC statement asserted.
Taking a dig at the silence maintained by the Manipur Government on the issue, the MPTC said that it is extremely unfortunate that CM O Ibobi and his cabinet prefer to remain silent than register their protest against the inhuman treatment meted out to the people of Manipur.
It appealed all conscious minds cutting across ethnic and regional lines to raise their voice in unison to stop insulting the people of NE in their own country.
The MPTC further asserted that it would not remain silent until the people of NE are treated with respect and dignity which is the right rather than a privilege of the people.
