Imphal, August 14 2017: Progressive Farmers Society organised the 4th Pineapple Festival at Thayong village, Imphal East , today .

Speaking as the chief guest at the event, Mongjam Poireihenba announced that he would provide the villagers with a machine to extract pineapple juice so as to prevent wastage of the fruit owing to the bad connectivity and mode of transport for exportation .

He pointed out that the festival began from the year 2011 with the aim of enabling the farmers to showcase and sell the sweet and tasty pineapples of the area to tourists and people from various parts of the State .

Poireihenba said that there has been no initiative from the authority's side to help the farmers regarding the huge numbers of pineapples which rots away due to lack of exposure and connectivity .

The juice machine will help in extracting the juice out of the pineapples and thus prevent most of the pineapples from going to waste, he added .

He also urged the people to take up necessary steps to urge the authority concerned to repair the road leading from Nongdam to Thayong and also urged the villagers to take advantages of the various benefits provided by the State Horticulture and Agriculture Department .

Speaking at the event, LOUSHAL president Mutum Churamani said that instead of importing rice from other States, the situation of the indigenous farmers will improve considerably if the State Government take up steps to supply the rice which is cultivated in the State itself .

The villagers of Thayong showcased the variety of pineapples grown in the area and various recreational events were also organised as a part of the event.
