AR recalls contribution to Joumoul landslide victims

The Assam Rifles made its best contribution to the rescue works at Joumoul village in Chandel district which was hit by a major landslide on August 1 .
A statement by the IGAR(S) recalled that the heavy downpour led to the huge landslide which scooped out the Joumoul village where no trace of people was left in the area.
'The news trickled out when one lone survivor reached Assam Rifles camp at Aibol Joupi on August 1' said the statement.
While the AR quickly swung into action and put all their resources to extricate the bodies and find any survivors, Central Government also pressed National Disaster Relief Force into action which landed at the Imphal Airport at midnight.
The AR troops searched around and found three survivors including the village chief.
The village chief revealed to the AR team that there were 74 people in the village while most of them left the village for Sugnu before the landslide occurred.
NDRF team landed by helicopter at Aibol Joupi and reached the site at 2 pm and in the further course of search by the combined team, four bodies were recovered, added the statement.
The search continued till the next day by both Assam Rifles and NDRF team looking for bodies and survivors.
The four bodies recovered were given a respectful burial at the village while the search was finally called off at 2.30 pm on August 4, added the statement.
