Ukhrul, April 08 2017:
Talui village has a huge potential for producing large quantities of agricultural crops and is possible to develop the village as a model organic village, said Zuringla Kengoo, Joint Secretary, Forest and Environment, IPR, Government of Manipur.
Speaking at the 5th district level garlic festival (Shuri Kaso Phanat) at the pre-centenary hall, Talui village, Ukhrul, Zuringla said garlic of talui village is well known among the Tangkhul community since time immemorial.
Since the soil and temperature of the village are suitable for growing garlic, extensive garlic farming besides other crops can be carried out, she said.
She further urged the village farmers to adopt agro-based organic farming and convert the village into a model organic village.

"The step will generate better income and improve the village economy and will also boost the livelihood of every household," she said.
Zuringla also lauded the village SHG group for producing more than 10,000 kgs of garlic this year.
Village farmer Mingthing said the size of the garlic bulb has become smaller which might be due to the loss of soil fertility.
Though the garlic production has increased, the village farmers could meet the demand only of the local consumers.
More than 4000 kgs of garlic worth of over Rs 1 lakh including other items were sold today during the festival.
As a part of the programme, Talui village and Talui Kharngarum SHG Federation also feted Rinyuichon Vashum, recipient of Nari Shakti Puruskar (highest individual award for women empowerment of the country 2016) .
