1 killed, 6 injured in Pallel twin blasts

Imphal, November 07, 2013: Barely two months after the Nagamapal blast that killed nine migrant workers and injured 11 others, the attack on migrant workers continued with one migrant worker killed and six others injured in twin blasts near a work shed at Pallel under Kakching Police Station at around 10.30 pm yesterday.

The deceased worker has been identified as Lalitkumar (30) of Muzafarnagar district of UP and presently of Silchar (Assam), while the injured persons as Santosh Ravidas (19), s/o Babul, Nirmal Ravidas (18), s/o Babul, Geeten Ravidas (32), s/o Babul, Moholal Ravidas (28), s/o Ramlal, Anup Ravidas (18) and Dayal Das (20), s/o Dhalu Das.

Six of them are from Pallarvon, Silchar and they are undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital.

Dy CM, Gaikhangam, who is also in-charge of the Home Department, personally went to inquire the condition of the injured workers at RIMS Hospital today afternoon.

He assured of rendering all possible assistances to the migrant workers.

According to reports culled from the spot, the twin blasts took place at an under-construction house of Moirangthem Maimu (30) of Pallel Bazar.

All the seven migrant workers were previously engaged in the construction of Maimu�s house.

But later, they took refuge at Maimu�s newly constructed house and began masonry works at nearby places.

All seven workers were staying together in one room at Maimu�s house.

The injured worker Geeten Ravidas works as the head mason while others as his subordinates.

They have been living in the area for the past two years.

The first blast took place just outside their room while they were asleep.

On hearing the blast, they woke up frightened.

However, another bomb went off right inside their room causing heavy casualties.

The blasts ripped apart the RCC walls of the house.

A team of police commandos attached with Pallel Police Outpost and Assam Rifles rushed to the spot soon after the blasts took place.

The injured workers were first admitted to Thoubal District Hospital for treatment.

MLA of Chandel Victor Nunghlung also came to inspect the blast site.

Meanwhile, a team of Manipur Police Bomb Squad inspected the blast site today and collected splinters and other components of the bombs for further investigation.

The police have also collected a hand bag containing Rs.29,500 from the spot.

Decrying the bomb blasts, various social organizations held sit-in-protest by closing down Pallel Bazar.

Ching-Tam Apunba Nupi Lup, Youth Voluntary Organization, Social Development Organization, Naga People�s Organization Chandel and Maring Uparup Assembly have condemned the incident and appealed to all concerned to maintain peace and harmony at Pallel area which is inhabited by people belonging to different tribes and communities.

Talking to media persons at RIMS Hospital, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam said that it was an act of cowardice to target innocent people.

The anti-social elements should be rooted out completely from the society.

Everyone should join hands to face such barbaric acts in the society, he appealed.

Stringent security measures have been taken up to prevent such unwanted incidents in the State, he noted.
