International Mother Language Day observed

To promote awareness of multilingualism, the Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation, Government of Manipur has observed the International Mother Language Day at Manipur Press Club, Imphal.
Speaking at the programme, Director of Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation Dr L Mahabir said that the day has been observed here as well to recognise different dialects of various communities of the State and to urge to promote the same.
He said that UNESCO has chosen the theme "Towards sustainable future through multilingual education" for this year's observance of the International Mother Language Day.
"The day has being observed every year since 1952 under UNESCO to remember the movement for promotion of Bangla language by students of Dhaka University, Jagnath University and Dhaka Medical College," he said.
He added, "Language/dialect is the foremost identity of an individual or a community.
As such, people should be proud of that and contribute to promote and conserve their respective language/dialect" .
The programme was also attended by Dr Aribam Ibomacha Sharma, News Editor and Head of Regional News Unit, All India Radio, Yurembam Ibomcha, Sahitya Akademi awardee and Leihaothabam Saratchandra Sharma, language activist.
