Imphal, July 13 2011:
Reacting to the report which appeared in the July 12th edition of this paper and wherein it was reported that more than fifty cattle heads have been killed following the outbreak of a mysterious disease in Makhan village in Tadubi block of Senapati district, the Veterinary office, Senapati has clarified that the number of deaths as per the report submitted to their office is 20 and not 50 .
In a statement, the Join Director of the Vety office said that on July 11 a report was submitted stating that 20 buffaloes had died in Makhan Otubu village by the chairman of the said village, H Hriini.
On immediate receipt of the report, a team led by Dr A Benzamin and Dr Simon Adaso along with the required medicines and vaccines was set to the said village at 11.30 am of July 11 .
On reaching the village, the team could not find any carcasses as the villagers had informed them that all the dead animals have been buried, said the statement and added no sick animals were also found.
The team however advised the Village Authorities to immediately report if any deaths occur and not to dispose off the carcass.
From the spot inquiry it could only be assumed that the cause of death of the cattle could be due to consumption of water contaminated by insecticides, pesticides, weedicides used by farmers of the village.
As a precautionary measure the villagers were also advised to move their cattle to higher planes of the hill side.
Other than the report of July 11, the Veterinary office has not received any further report on the deaths of cattle, clarified the Joint Director.
