MSCP and CPI workers clash One killed in police firing

Imphal, January 29, 2012:
At least one woman was killed and two other injured by stray bullets in the firing by Thoubal police in Wangjing Tentha Assembly Constituency yesterday night as clash erupted between workers of CPI candidate M Nara and MSCP candidate Paonam Brojen.
According to locals, police began indiscriminate firing at Tentha Khongban Machin area about one kilometre away from the clash spot after the clash had ended.
The woman who was killed in the police action was identified as Moirangthem Ragini (45) wife of M Inaobi of Tentha Khongban Mamang Leikai.
She received bullet injuries on her chest.
However, family members thought she was suffering from BP stroke at first.
The bullet injuries were discovered only after she was admitted to the RIMS hospital.
The other two women who received bullet injuries have been identified as Moirangthem ongbi Medhapati (30) wife of M Devdas and Naorem Sorodhoni (51) wife of N Sanaton from Tentha Khongban Mamang Leikai.
Medhapati sustained three bullet injuries on her thigh and hips while Sorodhini recieved a minor scratched on her left shoulder.
Meanwhile, locals of Tentha Khongban today staged a sit in protest.
A public meeting was also held and a JAC was formed against the police act.
The public meeting demanded ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of deceased Ragini and a suitable government job to one of her sons or daughters, a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to Medhapati who was injured in the incident and arrest of the police personnel responsible for the incident by a conducting proper enquiry.
The meeting also resolved not to take the body if the demands are not met with and to take up further intense agitation against the incident by 2 pm of January 31. In the meantime, Moirangthem Subon whose house was destroyed by CPI workers told reporters that the ceiling of his house, scooter and cycles were burnt in the incident.
Moreover a cash of Rs 3 lakh and a gold chain which he was collecting to treat his heart patient wife and cancer patient mother in Mumbai after the vote were also lost, he said.
Condemning the act of CPI workers he further said that he did not participate in the election.
Even though MSCP candidate Paonam Brojen was his brother-in-law, he refrained from participating in any poll related activities with Brojen, he added.
Earlier at around 6 pm yesterday MSCP workers attacked and ransacked the houses of CPI workers Maibam Birachandra, Ningthoujam Ingobi, both of Wangjing Hodamba, RK Mobisana and Yumnam Samson alias Basan both of Wangjing Sorokhaibam Leikai.
