Imphal, May 29 2016:
Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA) has announced an indefinite ban on the business activities of non-locals in the State with immediate effect.
In a statement, KSA president Lakhsman said that the decision was taken as the Government has failed to heed their demand for unconditional release of five KSA executives arrested by the police in connection with pulling up of two non-locals allegedly involved in the adulteration of common salt.
No non-locals must open their shops and perform any form of business activities during the ban, Lakhsman said and added that anybody who defies the ban must be held responsible for any eventuality.
He further said that KSA would impose curfew on movement of non-locals if the Government continues to detain the KSA executives.
Saying that KSA has taken serious note of the Government move of shielding the black marketers and persons involved in food adulteration, Lakhsman said that KSA would never retract from its decision until the arrested executives are released.
Regarding the May 27 incident, he said that KSA volunteers pulled up Rajesh Kumar Yadav (28) of Bihar and Dasrat Prasad (48) of Telipati for adulterating common salt.
After they brought the two persons to their office to parade them before the media, they received a phone call from the police asking them to hand over the duo to the police.
Even as the KSA executives were holding a press conference regarding the matter, a police team led by City police OC came to KSA office and arrested five KSA executives.
Other KSA leaders tried their best to secure the release of their innocent executives till late night, he said and added that they were however sent to jail the next day (May 28) .
Peeved with the incident, KSA sent an ultimatum to the Government to release the executives within 24 hours, Lakhsman said.
However, the Government has failed to give any positive response till date, Lakhsman said and added that as such they are compelled to announce the ban on business activities of non-locals.
He said that all the arrested executives have been staging hunger strike in the jail.
