Imphal, October 11 2020: Even as the State has started facing shortage of ICU beds for treatment of COVID-19 patients, it is being speculated that the total number of positive cases may reach around 25,000 by mid-November in the State.

Meanwhile, the death toll has surged to 91 following the death of three persons during the last 24 hours at RIMS and JNIMS.

During a meeting of the COVID-19 State Consultative Committee held last evening with Chief Minister N Biren in the chair, officials of Health Department cautioned that the total number of positive cases may reach even 25,000 by mid-November.

The meeting discussed about enhancing accommodation facilities and manpower needed for combating the pandemic.

Another key agenda of the meeting was acute shortage of beds in ICUs needed for treatment of COVID-19 patients in critical conditions.

Notably, there are just 31 beds in the ICUs of RIMS and JNIMS.

Apart from deliberating on increasing the number of ICU beds and other beds for COVID-19 patients in both JNIMS and RIMS, the meeting proposed conversion of Babina Speciality Hospital into COVID hospital.

The Government also brought up another agenda on whether lockdown should be re-imposed or what should be done with the COVID-19 situation in Imphal West district where maximum number of positive cases are reported almost every day.

Experts who attended the meeting recommended declaration of areas/localities where positive cases have been detected in multiple numbers as containment zones and imposition of curfew in such containment zones.

They also recommended stricter action against people who do not wear face masks.

According to a press release issued by Additional Director (Health) and COVID-19 Common Control Room spokesman Dr Khoirom Sasheekumar Mangang, three COVID-19 positive people died at RIMS and JNIMS during the last 24 hours.

The latest victims were a 64-year old woman from Imphal West, an 87-year old man from Imphal East and a 70-year old woman from Churachandpur.

In the meantime, 234 people including 12 personnel of CAPF were tested positive for COVID-19 during the last 24 hours at JNIMS, RIMS, Imphal West, Thoubal, Acme, Maipakpi Hospital, Tengnoupal, Churachandpur, Raj Medicity, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching, RD Wing, Swiss Clinic, Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Babina Diagnostics, Shija Hospital, Kangpokpi, Advance Hospital and Jiribam.

Of the 222 civilians who have been tested positive, 132 belong to Imphal West, 37 to Imphal East, seven to Thoubal, one to Kangpokpi, two to Jiribam, one to Noney, one to Senapati, two to Ukhrul, three to Kakching, 12 to Bishnupur, eight to Tamenglong, two to Tengnoupal and 14 to Churachandpur.

Out of them, 219 have no significant history of travelling outside the State.

Meanwhile, 198 COVID-19 positive people have been discharged during the last 24 hours from home isolation (45), JNIMS (2), Kakching (1), CCC UNACCO (29), CCC Lamboi Khongnangkhong (51), Bishnupur (20), Chandel (10), Ukhrul (3), Thoubal (10), Senapati (3), Moreh (3), Jiribam (9), Lamding (4), Kangpokpi (5) and CAPF (1) .

The cumulative figure of positive cases is 13,326 (general population 10,790, Central security personnel 2,536) .

It includes 2731 active cases (general population 2376, Central security personnel 355) and 10,504 discharged cases (general population 8,327, Central security personnel 2177).The recovery rate stands at 78.82 per cent.

A late report informed that out of 547 samples tested today at JNIMS, 113 were found positive.

In Thoubal, 14 people were found infected after rapid antigen test today.

Further, 66 persons were found infected by the contagion in Imphal West district today.

They include one member of ISKCON Temple who returned from outside the State and four residents of Konchak Yangbi.

Moreover, four personnel of Imphal police station were tested positive at RIMS today.
