Imphal, April 14 2012:
On the occasion of the Martyrs' Day, fitting tributes have been paid to 'martyrs' who laid down their lives in the course of the revolutionary movement at different places across the State yesterday.
Family members, friends and relatives of the eight PLA cadres who were killed in a gun battle with security forces at Kodompokpi on April 13, 1982 have been observing April 13 as martyrs' day every year.
The main function of the "martyrs' day" was held at the martyrs' memorial complex located at Cheiraoching, Thangmeiband.
In spite of the rainfall, people from different parts of the State came to Cheiraoching and offered floral tributes to the martyrs.
Earlier, family members filed a petition at Gauhati High Court seeking permission to observe "martyrs' day" without any disturbance from the State.

After hearing the petition, the High Court on April 10 directed the State to allow uninterrupted observation of the memorial function.
Nevertheless, a large number of Imphal West District Police personnel were seen deployed around Cheiraoching.
The police personnel checked all the people who came to offer floral tributes and ensured that they did not carry any festoons, placards or banners with anti-national slogans or words.
However, the police personnel made little disturbance during the whole course of the memorial function.
