The State administration tightened security measures and suspended curfew relaxation period tomorrow in Greater Imphal and Thoubal in view of tomorrow�s proposed large scale sit-in-protest against extension of the Naga cease-fire to Manipur.
Curfew has been lifted in Churachandpur though a prohibition under Section 144 CrPC is still in force.
An official source said that the prohibition will be relaxed from 11 am till 1 pm to allow holding of peaceful demonstrations and dharnas in Churachandpur tomorrow.
AMUCO and the United Committee, Manipur (UCM) an umbrella organization of AMSU, AMUCO, AMKIL, IPSA NIPCO and UPF have urged the people to organize mass sit-in-protest tomorrow against the case fire extension to the soil of Manipur.
The mass protests have been called in the backdrop of the crucial July 8 meeting slated to be held between the representatives of State leaders and the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister in Delhi.
AMUCO said sit-in-protests will be held all over the State tomorrow from 8 am against the decision of the Centre to extend the ceasefire to the soil of Manipur and to safeguard the territorial integrity of the State.
AMUCO appealed to all the people to suspend their daily activities for the day and participate in the mass protests.
The protests will be held in a democratic and peaceful manner and any elements that try to foment trouble will be regarded as acting against the interest of the people, warned AMUCO.
Medical personnel have been asked to co-operate with the people and they will be given relaxation to go ahead with their daily routine, said the statement.
United Committee Manipur has also asked all the people to participate in the sit-in-protests which are to be held from 8 am till 4 pm.
Government employees have also been asked to take part in the protests and people have been asked to ply off their vehicles.
Black flags will also be put up at all the sit-in-protests sites.
The AMSU and AAMSU said their movement will continue both in Manipur and Assam despite the indefinite curfew in Manipur.
They also condemned imposition of the indefinite curfew.
The convenor of the Imphal Bazar Community has asked all the members of the community to suspend their business and close their establishment tomorrow and assemble at Dharmashala for a joint sit-in-protest at 8 am to oppose the cease-fire extension to the soil of Manipur.
AMUCO and UCM also paid salute to the 14 persons who laid down their lives tin the June 18 uprising and also to the Ima Laishram Ongbi Tamphasana (48) of Kwakeithel Moirang Purel Leikai who died during the torch rally yesterday.
The two organisations pledged that they would oppose any move to compromise with he territorial integrity of Manipur.
Meanwhile Divisional Commissioner No.1, Ch Birendra told the press that curfew relaxation was suspended to pre-empt the outbreak of violence.
He said the administration has received inputs from the DCs and police officers that trouble may break out during the mass sit-in-protests planned for tomorrow.
On the other hand despite the curfew enforcement the six member parliamentary team of the Left parties will arrive here tomorrow.
