The former Chief Minister and now a Member of Parliament Rishang Keishing has charged that the teachers in the state are showing no concern for improvement of education in the state. Seeing the number of private tuition seeking students, who are going either in the morning or in evening to the houses of teachers one can come to the conclusion that the teachers are not teaching the students properly in the schools and colleges. The ever-increasing number of private schools, which have mushroomed everywhere, should be seen as a disease, which is eating into the vitals of the society. Set against these privately run schools these Government institutions cannot be as effective as it used to be in the past. Naturally the teachers who have not found the right students they could teach properly have to go out for contract works. Mr Keishing has asked whether these teachers are working for pay only. Who is to be blamed for all mismanagement in schools and colleges? The Government for that matter the concerned authority, which does not pay attention to the functioning of these schools and colleges, should be held responsible for the deteriorating status of education in Manipur. In some schools the number of teachers exceeds the number of students. Such institutions should have been wound up and the teachers collected from these non functioning schools could have been sent out to where they are needed most. The education Department under the new Minister Maniruddin Sheikh thought of amalgamating all these non-functioning schools, but the plan was dropped mid way. That shows that the department is still imbibing the old theory that there is a gulf of difference between rhetoric and action. It speaks one thing and does the other thing. Such department will not bring any good to the society. Education is the torch in the dark world. The darkness that has descended on the society can be removed only when the masses are given proper education. Unlike in the past the number of school dropouts has increased. Does it have anything to do with the deteriorating law and order situation in the state? After all these school drop outs have openly asked what benefit they will get by pursuing for more academic achievement when there is no surety they will get government job. The bleak future looks to them. The day today happening that is reported from everywhere has entered the young minds like virus which is breeding more evils. Our leaders have a big role to play in eliminating the evils, which are breeding in the society. The unstable mind is the breeding ground for evils. Nobody remembers these young people. Steps have to be taken to instill a sense of confidence to these young people. They must feel protected. These frequent of call of bandhs for one reason or the other should be stopped at all cost because it plays a factor in causing social trauma, which affects the young minds. Can anybody say with precision whether the Americans called bandh when the twin towers were smashed by sky borne terrorists? Can anybody say rightly whether Americans retaliated against the fellow Muslim brothers, as Indians did in Gujarat, in the aftermath of twin tower smashing? It is time we review the situation keeping all perspective in view. Are we are different from the people in the developed nation, therefore the ailment lingers. Let us do something to instill a sense of confidence in the young minds, so that they will like to learn more, read more.
