The book features essays on religion, culture, history, language and literature. The author writes about the life of Konthoujam Khelendra Subedar, the man who arrested Prince Tikendrajit. Khelendra was born in 1848 at Sibsagar. He has eight sons and seven daughters. He was about 40 at the time of arresting Tikendrajit. He won a reward of Rs 5 thousand for arresting the Prince. The author also writes how the goddess Taibangjan Laikhurembi was worshipped at several places. Goddess Laikhurembi is now worshipped at Uripok, Lamdengkhun and Louwat village in Jaribon. The activities of Laikhurembi is also written in detail. On the issue of culture the book features, three articles based on the Meitei marriage system, the origin of the game of hockey (indigenous to Manipur) and the Meitei New Year's Day. The different types of marriage prevalent among the Meitei society are 1. Married by force, 2. Married by elopement and 3. Married by engagement. From the time of the mythical heroes and heroines like Apam Thoiba, Naophangba, Nongpok Ningthou and Panthoibi of the ancient Manipur the first and the second type of marriage were prevalent. Naophangba married Yaoreima, the wife of Thangyi Khongjrongba by force. King Pamheiba also married Thambal, a married woman. But today in our modern Manipuri society this type of system is abolished. In the chapter of language and literature the writer lays his excessive claim that Naoria Phulo's prose and poetry should be placed equalizing Chaoba, Kamal and Anganghal. |
