Save Sharmila campaign in collaboration withe Repeal AFSPA team organised a peaceful protest march in Delhi University to show their support to Irom Sharmila and her on going 11 year long hunger strike. But the movement was heavily disrupted by right wing radicals ( ABVP) as they saw this march as 'Anti-Indian' and 'Anti-Army'. Stones were pelted at Sharmila supporters, they were abused and finally the loose Delhi Police decides to arrest peaceful Sharmila supporters over the violent attackers as those right wing goons had political affiliations and the others were just common man fighting for peace and justice.
Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign(SSSC) is a nation-wide protest against the neglect and suppression of Irom Sharmila. We are demanding with government:
1. To start positive steps of talk with Irom Sharmila & to listen her demand seriously
2. To send an all party delegation at Imphal to meet her
3. To send members of NWC & NHRC for investigation of human rights violation there
Irom Sharmila is a manipuri poet and an activist who has been on a hunger strike for 11 years now. She has been protesting against the draconian law of AFSPA (Armed Special Forces Power Act) which was enforced in the north-east in 1958. The AFSPA calls for an autocratic and unchecked rule by the army. In the name of 'protecting the law and order', anyone can be arrested or shot. It has led to extra-judicial killings, illegal detentions, fake encounters, rapes and torture of the civilian population. According to official records, since 1980, more than 25,000 civilians have been killed.
Still government is silent on the issue. Lets start raising our voice together in support of Irom.
