IN WHAT appears to be the spillover of political rivalry, Henkhothang Haokip, the chief of S Nabil Village under Churachandpur district, was shot dead by some unidentified gunmen at his own residence on the night of September 7 last.
Though the bereaved family members have named three persons including former MLA Shepu Haokip as accused in the murder and the public of Churachandpur have launched various intense agitations to demand justice, the case is almost forgotten today.
In the wee hours of October 1, Charanga Modun Maring, former Chairman of Lamlong Khullen village under Chandel district, was shot dead by suspected armed cadres of NSCN-IM at the house of his second wife.
Although the exact motive behind the killing was not known and the Naga rebel group did not come up with any clarification over the alleged involvement of its cadres in the act, it was widely believed that the killing may have been politically motivated as Charanga was a worker of local MLA DK Korungthang.
But nothing definite has been known about the case today apart from the fact that Tengnoupal Police Station had registered a case to start an investigation into the matter.
In the latest incident of gun violence that has all the appearances of political rivalry, cadres of Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), the armed wing of Zomi Re-unification Organisation (ZRO) struck at the Langol Games Village residence of P Songlianlal, who is the Principal of St Peter English School, Langol on October 7 morning.
Songlianlal had contested in the last election to the State Assembly on Trinamool Congress ticket from Churachandpur Assembly but was defeated.
Though his wife and son sustained bullet injuries, Songlianlal escaped unhurt and lives on to tell the tale behind the attack unlike in the two previous.
Apart from rounding up one of the armed assailants, Songlianlal has not only disclosed that he received threats from ZRO/ZRA for being a Trinamool Congress' candidate for Churachandpur A/C in the last Assembly election but also implicated the names of MLA of Thanlon Assembly Constituency Vungzagin Valte and a son of Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing.
Of course, the Minister and the MLA have refuted the allegations and the armed outfit has come up with counter-charges against Songlianlal, but all these recent violent incidents have disturbed the minds of the people who long to live in peace and harmony.
What is even more disturbing to us in the present case is the involvement of an armed group which is said to have been already brought under the agreement of Suspension of Operation with the government.
Leaving aside the question of political vendetta for a while, we feel the government definitely owes an explanation here.
