Understanding DM University Education at colleges
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: March 05, 2015 -
It is good to see that the Chief Minister seems to have around to the idea that it does not make much sense to make himself the Chancellor of the proposed Dhanamanjuri University, if his suggestion to make the Governor the State Chancellor on the floor of the Assembly on March 3 is any indication.
Mr Ibobi should understand that making an active politician the Chancellor will defeat the very purpose and intent of setting up such a university in the first place.
The change of mind obviously came in the backdrop of the right noises made by political parties like the BJP.
This is apart from the snide remarks exchanged amongst the people, especially people who are concerned with the state of education in Manipur.
Now that the Chief Minister seems to have around to the idea that it is nonsensical to occupy the Chancellor’s chair of the proposed university, it is only right that some serious thoughts are given to what has been passing off as education in the college level.
Time for the Government to seriously study why numerous students bid adieu to the State to pursue their college education after Class XII.
While students going out to the big world to pursue their higher education sounds attractively good, it also says something disturbing about the level of education at the college level here.
This is a thought which should have seized the attention of the Government a long time back.
A point which has been said before but no harm in repeating it again, especially in the face of the fact that the Class XII examination under the Council of Higher Secondary Education has just got over. CBSE students too will wind up their examination some time later.
DONER Minister Dr Jitender Singh may have had the right intention in stating that all students from the North East should return and serve their home States.
Something which has already been commented upon. However it is clear that no thoughts have been given on why numerous students make it a point to go outside to pursue their college education.
Things may not have been like this earlier, as Manipur had some good colleges, especially DM College.
But down the years, the standard of education, especially at the college level has been plummeting and this is a curse which the present youngsters have to face.
For the well off and prosperous parents, sending their children outside may not pose much of a problem, but it sure is a big headache for numerous parents to bear the expenses.
Education has certainly become a costly affair for numerous parents in Manipur. Serious thoughts ought to be given on this.
If the Government has not shown any sensitivity to what passes off as education at the college level, then the public too need to ponder over why students have always been at the receiving end.
The number of bandhs and the spanner thrown in the academic pursuit of students are sure to derail the hopes and aspirations of numerous students.
This is something which no one seems to think about.
The proposal for Dhanamanjuri University is appreciated, but more important it is for everyone to study what is wrong with college education here.
