Trussed people of Manipur
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: April 27 2015 -
Notwithstanding the Supreme Court order against the blockades and other forms of obstructions, Manipur is experiencing blockades, general strikes and wildcat strikes along the State and the National Highways round the year.
Any group including the armed outfits have been clamping such disruptions with impunity any time for localised and sometimes for demands based on ethnic lines.
The trials and tribulations of the people who are held to ransom by these crippling strikes are completely ignored by the Government.
From the moment, when a strike is imposed, prices of all commodities are hiked beyond the reach of the common people and fuel is sold through the blackmarket and long time back the oil pump owners had learned that is more lucrative to siphon off like this.
Under pressure from the people, the Government had approached the centre to raise a highway protection force since there are restrictions of the movement of the police and paramilitary personnel in another state.
But the insensitive centre which does not care two hoots of the exploited people of Manipur merely brushed it aside contemptuously saying that since it is a law and order matter the Manipur government should deploy the state forces.
Because of shortage of strength and logistical complications police and IRB from Manipur cannot escort all the way to Shillong, Guwahati or Silchar.
Besides the vehicles cannot be driven at speed in the potholed NHs which have numerous hair pin bends.
There had been instances galore of armed persons whisking away drivers from the cavalcade guarded by CRPF personnel.
Instead of harping on issues which can never be conceded it is high time pressure groups prevailed upon the government to take up steps to give relief to the people.
After the blockade by the contractual teachers now the UNC is going ahead with a general strike from tonight.
Other phases of such disruptions will come inexorably and the plight of the people is all forgotten.
