With huge power deficit that threatens to overturn the great Indian quest for superpower status, the Central government is aggressively pursuing a single agenda of squeezing every ounce of hydel power in the Northeast including the Tipaimukh. Damming the Tipaimukh at the centre of the high seismic zone to generate 1500 MW is a high in priority for the Government of India (GoI). But what does it mean for the people whose life will be irreparably changed forever?
Yumnam Rupachandra of Seven Sisters Post caught up with Jiten Yumnam, a prominent human rights activist, to understand the people’s issues even as an Indo-Bangla sub-group has been formed to trash out the differences between the two countries. Bangladesh has been protesting the downstream impact of the dam but with formation of the sub-group, the issue may be a history.
