I walk and work around. I explore the world in search of a corner, a corner where our people can feel social ownership. Nowhere I found, - it is unfortunate that we are unlucky-. I give importance to the concept of ownership. Researches in the fields of Management, Psychology and Sociology undoubtedly pronounced that the feeling of ownership gives psychological encouragement. It arouses a sense of responsibility and belongingness, and it motivates to perform better. I think we really need this requisite to restore peace and harmony.
On the way, my education infused me a pragmatic approach through which I came to know that the social facts and happenings are making us to feel secluded from the big society -India-. The approach is "Analysis of Social Dialogues", which resulted to make me feel that Manipur is just a geographical area not a part of Indian society and its ethos. It is very hard to believe but when I started comparing our state with other states, I am convinced with it. Analysing the flow of Social Dialogues imbued me with the ability to see the ego involves in big social messages and also about its cause and effect.
The dialogues that I am using herewith, to some extent, may directly oppose to the monologue of the dominant prevailing culture of the power groups. However, as I am inspired with my concern to unfold the feelings of our brethrens, I am humbly using the name of our State. To begin with:
The first PM of India: "Manipur, the land of Jewels".
Manipur: "Indeed a beautiful translation. But I am surprised, who gave the name Manipur?, what is the rationale? And, how it was accepted? No doubt, our state is endowed with natural scenic beauty. However, the name is over stretched. Shame, shame, few years back WISDOM incorporated some lines on the fact that our state is "Manipur" without any "Mani" i.e. resource.
People from any other states, with an upward posture, say that the name of their state bears its own values and gives them the feeling of ownership. But we cannot assert like them. Let us see:
Assamese-Assam, Naga-Nagaland, Mizo-Mizoram etc. Let us also see: Five rivers-Punjab, Central state-Madhya Pradesh, Northern-Uttar-Uttar Pradesh etc. The names tell the world about their history, values and location. Here, the case is very different: Meitei / Kangleicha / Sana / Lupa……… (see all the alternatives) - Manipur??? Where is the derivation? My conscience says, "Nothing". This little topic glues with the replacement -Calcutta to Kolkata. Likewise, there are many other examples. This was about our name, let us also discuss about the happenings.
BSNL: "Connecting India"
Manipur: Your patent slogan makes me remember, "Action speaks louder than words."
BSNL Mobile: "BSNL has brought telephony to every nook and corner of this vast and varied land of ours. Now we go a step further by offering rates that are affordable for everyone. We truly connect India".
Manipur: Hmmm! Effective publicity. But it seems like either your "nook and corner" was different from the universal meaning or "land of ours" was confined somewhere. When did you bring your mobile service here? "Early bird catches the first insect" is not applicable here because you play the game of monopoly. Yours "truly" will be true to us when we get your full fledged services in full swing.
BSNL prepaid: "Roaming is available all over the Country except in the states of Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir".
Manipur: If you are not providing the roaming facility because of the terrains then that is your lack of commitment / show-cast of the bias you have against us. If you are afraid of insurgency then, there must be an alternative. Please see to it.
Reliance Infocomm: "Reliance Infocomm is the outcome of the late visionary Dhirubhai Ambani's dream to herald a digital revolution in India by bringing affordable means of information and communication to the doorsteps of India's vast population. We bring a new way of life".
Manipur: Oh! It was a nice dream. But your statements are hard to even visualize in the dreams of our state people. Please try to bring your technology at kangjeibung (Polo ground) at least; we will accept it as your doorsteps service.
Reliance Mobile: "Kar lo duniya Mutthi mein"
Manipur: Your business success in major India makes you feel so proud that you have developed your own duniya (world) that ends at Guwahati. Ha ha! Here, we can not even smell your digital revolution. It would be appreciable if you remake your map.
Hutch: "we are known for our innovative approach and world class technology. Our goal is to provide you superior products and services, anytime and anywhere".
Manipur: I want to say a lot about your "anywhere" but silence is better. Otherwise, your doggy will dog behind. I am afraid! But honestly speaking, please send it here also.
Idea Cellular: "An Idea can change your life".
Manipur: Would you please change your life? I mean your strategy to expand your area!
Dialogues are inevitable and continuous. However, we can group them into different categories: political, financial, health services, sports and many many more. The above dialogues were just from a single sector i.e. Telecom. They are psychological stressors. Now, you can imagine the limitless number of stressors if jump into other sectors. Lack of recognition, lack of scientific tools in all the spheres, lack of attention of the concerns, lack of understanding among ourselves, lack of objectivity……………..All are very distressing and may even result to high death rate. I agree to this point that contradiction / difference is the source of development but I assert that over difference / contradiction creates a feeling of seclusion. We can have a crystal picture about our stand point - our image - against ourselves and in the eyes of others too through this analysis of Social Dialogues.
In this era of Globalised economy, it is very disgraceful that people do not want to invest money in this region. They know that there will be no profit. Why? Manipur does not have "Mani" -resources-. We know the fact; we do have two big resources: Natural scenic beauty and Human Resources. The two can change things around. Potential is there. However, the stimulant to trigger it is nowhere. Why? Government said that this is not a secure zone and the public reflected that the government does not pay proper interest. In 1982, eminent geographer, J.P Singh submitted in his "Human Resources of North-Eastern India" that Imphal valley is enough to make Manipur self-sufficient in staple food. Here, the issue is not of "Human wants are Unlimited". The issue is of the need of development. And, development needs invariable supports from both the Government and Public. Social unrest is sure if government is unable to understand the needs of public. If Public is not allowing the Government to perform the needful then also social unrest is sure. Manipur needs profusion support and recognition from all the concerns. To make people to recognize us, we have to first bring unity among ourselves and convince them through some apt strategies. Let us not forget, "Whole is always greater than the sum of its parts". I mean SYNERGY.
I wish, if Rabindranath Tagore incorporated Brahmaputra also in the National Anthem. It would have given North Eastern Region more proximity to the mainland and a sense of belongingness to some extent. The narrow passage which connects NE region with the mainland seems overloaded. Anyway, my messages are: "Let us discover our own ignorance and patterns of others' ignorance about us -Are they deliberate or not?" and secondly, "Give us the way, give us your hand; we all will see the exit of unsocial essence from social dialogues". This feeling of seclusion can be healed by bringing BALANCE, BALANCE and BALANCE.
