THE ENIGMATIC
"The Waves turning the Love, our Youths & our Society"
- A call for parents and teachers -

By: Paramananda Chabungbam *

If I am asked to define LOVE then, I would like to lay down my quotation, "Love is the only chain that binds our past with our present for a better future".

If I am asked to say something on YOUTH then, I would like to unfold my lines,

"Youth of courage is loved by all,
Youth of kindness is liked by all,
Youth of discipline is sought by all,
Youth of enthusiasm is blessed by all".

If I am asked to speak on our SOCIETY then, I would like to say, "Our Society is the web of Kangleichas guarded by our youths and powered by our elders. They are inspired by the love that glues between them and between our past and our present for a better future". Oh! This is very ideal, however, pragmatic still. So, let us replace the "is" & "are" with "should be". The lines on society itself has clearly explained about the relationship of the above three aspects.

Love is an inevitable and a dominant relationship that makes my saying - "No man is island unto himself" true. Love is the gospel in one word. For love, people co-operate, quarrel, separate, join, work, wait and fight. Love has always been a favourite topic for poets, bards, novelists and singers. People of different ages experience and encode love differently. Human learns the art of loving from 'self-love', which starts from infancy. With the development of mind and body, people link love with many aspects of social interaction and education they have. Thus, we generate and expand our love for each other.

However, on the present stage of our society there is a need to pay attention to the LOVE of adolescents for the opposites. Here, the value and meaning of love is different and awkward, the whip of the western wave and the blow of Bollywood are turning out very heavy on us. With their influence, it seems like our youths explore creativity to fancy love. The beautiful connotation of love is minimized and its essence is much artificial. This affects your family and our society in many ways by bringing change in culture, etiquette, interpersonal relationship, behaviour and, above all, in way of living that distress you and the state socially and economically. To prevent from these influences, proper parenting and schooling are the primary steps/measures in my eye. Therefore, let us critically discuss the issue with little labour.

Speaking from the tongue of present stage, Love encompasses physical appearance and attractiveness, education, wealth, religion, culture, language, race and tradition. Considering these factors, "Is it fair?" is the question raised by many youths frequently. The pinching reason probably is that they have the tendency to see love as an artificial creation. Orthodoxy is the barrier to the true lovers but it is also a helping hand controlling illicit and impure love relationship to some extent. Now, the call of time is that we should try to walk on the positive connotation of LOVE despite generalizing negative notions about this wonderful word -LOVE-. We can understand LOVE from the famous - "Triangular Theory of Love" conceptualized by Robert J Stenberg. In his view love has three faces: Intimacy (the emotional element, involves self-disclosure which leads to warmth and trust), Passion (the motivational element based on inner drives that translate physiological arousal into sexual desire) and, Commitment (the decision to love and to stay with the beloved). Based on the above faces, there are some patterns of loving:-

  • Non-love (intimacy, passion and commitment are absent),
  • Liking (only intimacy is present i.e.; closeness, understanding, emotional support, affection and warmth),
  • Empty love (commitment is the only component present, it is found in arranged marriage),
  • Romantic love (intimacy and passion are both present but not committed to each other),
  • Companionate love (intimacy and commitment are present but physical attraction has died out),
  • Fatuous love (passion and commitment are present without intimacy, the commitment is generally drawn by the passion and doesn't last long) and
  • Consummate love (all the three components are present).

The last form is what we have to learn from his theory. But it is poignant that the dominating love pattern in our society, the Passionate love is usually driven by unconscious demand and brings doomsday ahead. Decades ago, an internationally conducted UNESCO poll revealed that 65-70% of American and European married women felt deceived, frustrated and dissatisfied. These lead to high number of divorces and many other problems. In addition, there are research findings, which support that 70-75% of American teenagers and adolescents lost their virginity. Many of them face premarital pregnancy. These are because of their style of living. Now, you can easily guess the latest approximate percentages! There are Indian data available on the similar issues, which caution us. Hmm! This is a point of deviation of civilization from socialization. Their trend has influenced our youths, and our youths have an inclination towards learning and adopting their style. Indeed a pixilated orientation - just smirching the society. The pillars of our future are letting themselves diseased through TV channels, Internet and other means of communication -A hot issue but cold use of advanced information technology. Our youths are imitating the trend as if they are the true image of this mysterious world forgetting that the networks are commercialized, - a great delusion. This is how our youths learn the art of modern dating and romance. We can correlate this issue with the increased rate in STD, HIV and other disorders, which are the hindrances to our society. It brings many ill effects to mental and physical health. This hampers the speed of socialization. It is an immoral fashion and a sign of uncivilization, as civilization does not measure only material world. It is a vexation to our present society and a curse to our future world. The parents and teachers should take up immediate steps by pouring comprehensive education and guidance to the concerns.

The western wave also brought the diseases like "auto mania" and "infatuation". Automobiles become not only a status symbol for youths but also an absolute requirement. This is directly or indirectly related to their way of encoding the meaning of LOVE. Just driving around to see what is happening in the favoured area is an obsessive sport that is like the existing problem of drug addiction. "Infatuation" is the most insane type, the most illusive. A wink of girl is translated, as "I like you". Imagining dozens of exciting romantic aspects, staring and sticking to opposite gender group in a degrade way has direct connection with mental and physical deterioration thereby spoiling their own career. One should keep in mind, "Make hay while sunshine". Because, we have no Yesterdays, time has taken them away, Tomorrow may not be but we have Today. Proper utilization of our Today is a must. For this, a joint venture of both the parents and teachers is sought.

Neither left nor right leg cannot climb up the mountain. Therefore, true love is necessary as it motivates, cooperates and coordinates in achieving the goal. To avoid fluctuation in the journey, enthusiasm, trustworthy, moral, honesty, sincerity, qualification and career are some of the characteristics of the character we should look. Humanity cannot survive for a day without love. So, one must share it consciously with high conscience. To compare the standpoint of our society with other's society is a soul duty of elders as well as of youngsters for all round development. We will see more backwardness if the "ID" (intrinsic demand/desire) of the youths is not control and directed properly in right time by their parents and second home -school / college-. Proper guidance and sex-education are the keys to minimize the problem. Ours is an enigmatic society. Our culture, tradition, language and social politics are blurred. The perspective of our own towards our future should be very clear and, the perspective of other people towards our society should be understood. To stand firm with our identity, comparative analysis and self-appraisal are necessary. We should sense our standpoint and we should know where we are heading on. If the youths are not moulded properly, no one can save our society from becoming more and more enigmatic. Youth comes once in a lifetime. Dear youths, let us contribute anything to the society; the value of our youthfulness will remain evergreen echoed in the air of our evergreen mountain ranges circled society. Our society will be called prospective and vigorous even after our youthfulness is snatched away by the inevitable progression of age if contribution is made by each and every Kangleicha.

Let us love our 'Past' to love our 'Present' for a bright future of our Society.
