Scums in revolutionary garb
- Sangai Express Editorial :: October 15, 2008 -
It is obvious to all that quite a number of anti-social elements have taken advantage of the situation in Manipur to assume the role of sons of the soil by cooking up some high sounding principles such as fighting for a cause of the land and under this cloak, extort money from the general public, especially from those in white collared jobs and traders.
There are a large number of armed groups operating in the State today and while all these groups claim to have certain aspirations, in reality they have not demonstrated anything to show that they are fighting against the enemy, which in this case is the Government of India and the State Government.
On the contrary these groups have become infamous for collecting money by force and if the demanded amount is not coughed up, use all means at its disposal which can range from threats, ultimatum and attacks either a bomb attack or a gun attack.
At the moment, a 14 year old girl is presently at RIMS undergoing treatment for a bullet wound on the chest as the attackers opened fire at the residence of a doctor to put on the pressure to give in to their demands. Not only this the residence of another doctor was also attacked and in response to the attacks on the two doctors, the staff and employees of RIMS have decided to cease work for 24 hours.
There have been protests galore against many of the monetary demands served on institutions and attacks on individuals connected with the same demand. It is the presence of these pseudo revolutionaries which have made life hell for the common people. Such groups announce their existence not by striking out at security forces, but by serving demand notes on the public.
The report that some doctors have quit Government service and are now engaged in private practice in the face of the growing threats associated with monetary demand is a big loss to the people and the State and also demonstrates the utter failure of the Government to provide a sense of security to the people.
The question now is how can such groups, which are nothing but anti-socials, be neutralised ?
While there is the security force to provide protection to the people, what is needed too is for the adult members of all families to keep a sharp vigil over the conduct of their wards.
It is well known that many of these groups recruit tax collectors in different places, under some high sounding principles and use them to not only deliver the demand notes but also to collect the money. Such collectors do not have any moral compunction and they are far removed from what revolutionary movements are all about.
In short they are nothing but scums of society. On the other hand the financial returns they receive for the errands dictated by the group is definitely handsome and comes without a single day’s honest labour.
When any youth, who has no known source of income but possesses expensive mobile hand sets, clothes, shoes and two wheelers then it is time for the adult members of the family to start monitoring the activities of their children and ward.
Or else the story of extortion and killings and attacks will continue unabated.
