Social Activism in India via fasting: Ramdev, Nigamananda and Irom Sharmila

India has been long renowned for its rich history of social activism and peaceful protesting. From famous historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi, to the more recently eminent personalities such as Medha Patkar and Anna Hazare, they have all utilized the technique of satyagraha in their demonstration rallies.
However, Baba Ramdev and Swami Nigamananda are newly started off activists, compared to Irom Sharmila, who has been on continuous fast for a little over a decade now. Protesting against the AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) for the past ten years is exhausting, especially when the government refuses to listen.
The most outrageous aspect of Sharmila’s case is that she was force-fed several times by the government, simply in order to break her fast. It is an undignified and utterly impractical tactic to adopt, seeing how Irom Sharmila simply begins her fast over again.
