Smallest Child's Heart operated at SKY Hospital
For the first time in SKY Hospital, a child only 4 months old was operated for a large birth heart defect / hole called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) on 18/11/2018 successfully. The baby boy called Kh. Doyan, S/o Mr. Kh. Devan Singh from Khurai Chingangbam Leikai, Imphal East was brought to the Free Children Heart OPD on 2/11/2018 with recurrent cough, fever and breathlessness and chest infection.
Free Echocardiogram (heart scan) was provided to him on the same day which revealed the large PDA, which started to damage the heart in the form of dilatation of left ventricle (main chamber of the heart) and severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) which was 69 mmHg (normal range < 30 mmHg).
For such large PDA in such young age device closure is risky and should not be attempted. Surgical closure with ligation of the duct, along with transfixation is the only option to save his life. He remained on ventilator (Figure 1) for 18 hours. Master Kh. Doyan recovered very well and was discharged home on day 7. Within 2 weeks of operation, his PA pressure has reduced from 69 mmHg to 39 mmHg. This will further reduce to normal range over the next few weeks.
Dr. Lairikyengbam Shyamkishore, Chairman and Chief Cardiologist of the SKY Hospital shown here with the child on the day of discharge expressed his happiness and satisfaction on the successful operation of the child. He stated that SKY Hospital will provide surgical and non-surgical treatment for any child born with birth heart defects whose weight may be as low as 2.5 Kg.
