Shangshak Day celebrations
To pay homage to the war heroes of World War II who made supreme sacrifice for the motherland fighting invading Japanese Forces, 17 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) conducted a wreath laying ceremony at Shangshak War Memorial on 26 Mar 2018.
The Battle of Shangshak epitomizes Civil-military cooperation in case of adversity. Besides the personals of British Indian Army numerous civilians also laid down their life in the battle and their names are engraved on the war memorial.
26th March is celebrated by 4th Maratha Li as their Battle Honour Day. The day known as Shangshak Day is also celebrated in befitting manner by the local Assam Rifles Battalion every year.
The memorial is located atop village Shangshak and the ceremony was attended by many civil and Assam Rifles dignitaries including nearby villagers to remember the history which gave shape to the fall of Japanese attacking forces.
Wreaths were presented on behalf of IGAR (South) and Commander 10 Sector Assam Rifles by Commandant 17 Assam Rifles on the occasion. After the ceremony, gift items were given to the village Headmen and other dignitaries of nearby villages.
A cultural programme was organised by local school children. Villagers pledged to continue their support to armed forces in defeating the nefarious designs of enemies of the nation.
