Richard Loitam's not an isolated case
Times of India | Bijoy Bharathan, TNN | May 4, 2012, 12.00AM IST
How many tragedies does it take for our collective consciousness to wake up to the mind-numbing reality of a morally vacuous academic system?
Recently, Richard Loitam, a 19-year-old student was allegedly beaten to death by his seniors in Bangalore in the midst of a cricket match screening. A few days later, Dana Sangma, an MBA student in New Delhi, committed suicide owing to the humiliation meted out to her by the authorities of her university, who accused her of cheating in the exams.
Says Harsh Agarwal, co-founder of Cure (Coalition to Uproot Ragging from Education), "These recent incidents are haunting reminders of the fact that young students in colleges across the nation are no different from their older, and dare I say, unrefined counterparts existing outside the confines of their campus. The sort of mechanical, learn-by-rote education provided to them is barely capable of endowing them with life skills and emotional intelligence. Is education capable of transforming individuals into thoughtful, emotionally healthy citizens or is it just churning out assembly line employees for the new workplace?"
