Need to revamp Sajiwa Jail : The great JN escape
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: April 02 2019 -
Not at all acceptable. Not at all tolerable.
The Government should not drag its feet over the matter and more than evident that no one is satisfied with the Magisterial Inquiry ‘solace’ offered by the Government to probe the death of
Constable Md Manjur Ahmad in police custody.
The death of the police Constable followed the dramatic escape of under trial prisoner Th Nando from JN Security Ward and there is the uncomfortable feeling that the death of the policeman could just be connected to the dramatic escape of the under trial prisoner.
This is where the demand that the investigation in the death of the police Constable be handed over to an independent inquiry team preferably the CBI gains credence.
A powerful statement that no one is ready to believe and have trust in any inquiry process initiated by the State Government and this is where a big question arises over the credibility of the State
Government.
To set things right, it is only expected of the State Government to act promptly and have the case handed over to a Central agency which can then probe whether a link can be established between
the dramatic escape of Th Nando and the death of the police Constable.
If such a suspicion is unfounded then let the probe agency say it for this is what will go down well with the people who have raised a hue and cry.
The State Government should also get down to the business of studying how the under trial prisoner could just walk out of the JN Security Ward and acknowledge the fact that mere damage control exercise like placing a few ‘low rung’ cops under suspension will not work.
The question that the average citizen is asking today is, how did Nando manage to escape from such a high security cell ?
Would he have been able to walk out without some inside job ?
Everything points to a conspiracy here and it is here that the State Government need to crack the whip and study the nexus between some cops and under trial prisoners at Sajiwa Jail.
The escape of Th Nando should be seen in its entirety and not merely look at the security measures taken up at JN Security Ward.
How influential are some prisoners inside the sanctum sanctorum of Sajiwa Jail ?
How can there be such an understanding as ‘influential’ prisoners inside the jail ?
Apart from cracking the case, the State Government need to study how prisoners are kept inside the jail, for remember this was not the first time that an under trial prisoner has walked away scot free
from JN Security Ward.
Remember Kangleipal. Jail administration, this is what the State Government should look into now.
Has the trend of the earlier days when some under trial prisoners are understood to have access to even mobile phones inside the jail and other banned substance such as gutka were recovered from the
inmates, returned ?
These are questions which the BJP led Government should seriously study after all jail administration is also about governance.
As a BJP led Government, it should not be too difficult to get suggestions and advices from Kiran Bedi who made a name for herself while looking after Tihar Jail many years back.
