Redundant Grand Narrative
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: May 30 2015 -
When one looks at the contemporary issues that have besieged a State like Manipur, it has become amply clear that there is a necessity to dismantle certain grand narrative which has caused undue stagnation of ideas and reproduction of social strategies.
Without going into the details of what actually triggered the cycle of political turmoil witnessed in the post 1947 phase, the widespread assertions both in the hills and the valley seemed to have been stirred in the correct paths by the 1980s impacting in what has often been termed as the great turns.
The foundation of these political assertions were not necessarily built on merely the conventional foundation of two-way-street contradictions but multiple causes fuelling on the reinforcement of the localised grand narrative and emergent counter narratives.
The near absolute social and political chaos witnessed in the recent past had been primarily set into motion by the political and social actors who have undergone poverty of ideas.
Otherwise, there is no way to explain how the body-politics in the present period came to a state of stagnation and decay.
There had been several external factors which have not only influenced the thinking of the upper middle class who were expected to absorb the objective conditions for simulating a fertile plane for progressive ideas.
One cannot help but allude to certain institutions based in the valley that have driven a wedge between communities based on territorial, social and religious demarcations.
This primarily means there has been not only a distortion of collective polity but also immobilisation of attempts to recover progressive elements from the past.
This, however, does not mean that the current obsessions with political and social assertions are only triggered by localised dynamics.
The changing socio-economic structure of societies both in the hills and the valley are also propelled by lopsided development resulting in asymmetrical well-being and prosperity.
Taking cognisance of the global changes impacting on local polity has become imperative task of those still willing to risk building a feasible dream for the future.
This is why there is a necessity for deconstructing the popular narratives that have illogically misled people and also to dismantle the redundant grand narrative which is fuelling attempt to dislocate dream(s).
