Readying for Class X and Class XII exams : Testing time for parents too
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: January 21, 2015 -
It is that time of the year again. An annual ritual it is but something more than just an annual affair.
And so it is that parents who have children appearing for the Class X and Class XII board exams will need to not only prime their children for the examinations but also themselves.
A reflection of how parents and guardians too need to be on their toes whenever the Class X and Class XII board exams get near.
Again a telling testimony of how involved parents and guardians have become in the educational pursuit of their children.
Maybe it is the demand of the time, but it is nonetheless a good change to see parents and elders of the family getting so concerned with the education of the young ones.
It was not always like this.
Probably competition was not as stiff as it is today and in many cases it was the practise to see parents and elders not very much involved in the education of their children and hence in the preparation of their exams.
With competition getting tougher and stiffer with each passing year and parents realising that education is the mantra for advancement, today it is not uncommon to see parents and guardians going all the way out to ensure good results for their children.
This is a healthy sign, no doubt about it, but there is also the need to sound a word of caution.
In the rush to ensure the best for their children, there are some parents and guardians who come under the impression that good grades must be had at any cost.
A point best exemplified by the mad rush for any school which have earned a dubious distinction for themselves, in that these institutions are not averse to the idea of extending a helping hand to the students at exam time.
Certainly with help and assistance, good grades are guaranteed but in the process parents have to question themselves whether they want their children to be educated lots or just some degree wielding ones, who cannot tell the difference between plus and minus.
Examinations are ideally meant for the students appearing for the said examination but today this has also come to mean examination time for parents.
In other words, it is not only the children who have to sit for the examinations but also parents and guardians who have to study the career options of their children.
This is where certain points need to be kept in mind. Education is not only about the marks one gets in an examination.
Marks are no doubt important, but it should not be the sole defining criteria of education. A point which should register in the minds of all parents and guardians.
For parents whose children are appearing in the Class XII examinations, the days of tension will probably go beyond the last date of examination.
Career choices have to be made and while it is expected of all parents to guide their young children, it would do no harm to keep in mind that it is also beneficial to keep the potential and ability of their children in mind.
Makes no sense in forcing anyone to take up a career choice, which is solely that of the parents.
Time for students to give their best shot and time for the parents to keep their expectations grounded.
