Public hearing for oil drill 'fails' again
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra | Imphal (Nov 22):
After raising fear of being annihilated by the ongoing exploration for oil and natural gas, the Hmar communities of Manipur have strongly opposed a public hearing held by the Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) for oil exploration in Tipaimukh region. The Committee on Protection of Natural Resources in Manipur (CPNRM) claimed that the oil exploration plan was rejected by the Hmar chief and villagers who attended the hearing.
Despite the Hmar Inpui, the Sinlung Indigenous Peoples Human Rights Organisation (SIPHRO), the Zomi Human Rights Foundation, among others boycotting the public hearing to express opposition to the oil exploration move, the MPCB, along with Jubilant Oil and Gas Ltd, held the fifth round of environment public hearing amid tight security at Shibapurikhal (Ankhasuo village) in Tipaimukh subdivision of Churachandpur district on November 21.
