Protests against fake encounters in Assam at New Delhi
NEFIS PROTESTS AGAINST THE FAKE ENCOUNTERS IN ASSAM!
CALLS FOR SUSPENSION OF PERSONNEL RESPONSIBLE WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT!
DEMANDS SETTING UP OF A JUDICIAL COMMISSION TO INQUIRE INTO SUCH CASES OF FAKE ENCOUNTERS!
The activists of North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) held a protest demonstration at Assam Bhawan today, to protest against the killing of innocent people in Chirang district. A delegation of activists also submitted a memorandum addressed to the Assam Chief Minister to the Resident Commissioner. It should be noted that Army, Assam Police, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel brutally killed innocent persons, Lucas Narzary and David Islary in Simlaguri village of Chirang district on 30th March on the pretext of identifying them as NDFB (Songbijit) militants. This is however a blatant case of fake encounter by the forces as brought out in the recent report of CRPF Inspector-General, Rajnish Rai.
According to the report, the encounters were staged; the two men were picked up from a house in D-Kalling village and killed in cold blood in Simlaguri. The IG has also stated that the weapons were planted on the bodies of the deceased later. The deceased could have been easily brought before law even if there was a strong suspicion against them, thereby ensuring the democratic rights which accrued to him. This case once again highlights the way in which rule of law is superseded by fake encounters in the states where AFSPA is implemented.
Following demands have been made in the memorandum submitted to the Resident Commissioner:
1. An immediate and independent inquiry of the case should be demanded from the central government.
2. All the security personnel responsible for the killing of Lucas Narzary and David Islary should be suspended with immediate effect and a judicial commission to inquire about all such incidents should be instituted.
3. Appropriate and immediate compensation should be provided to the victims’ family.
NEFIS has also pledged to build a huge movement against the Assam Government whose inaction would strongly imply that it protects even those security personnel who are implicated in heinous crimes and thereby curbs democratic rights of common people.
