PROF THOUNAOJAM RATANKUMAR SINGH Akademi Award: Literature (Translation)
Prof. Thounaojam Ratankumar Singh, born in 1958 at Singjamei Thongam Leikai, Imphal, belongs to a distinctive group of Manipuri writers who writes exclusively in English. A professor in English Department of Manipur University, Canchipur, he has so far published six books in English including two translation works.
His first publication. Lapsus Calamy (1984), a volume of English poetry, was nominated for Commonwealth Poetry Prize. It was followed by Ezra Pound and Imagist Poetry (2005) and two anthologies of English poetries and two translations from Manipuri to English namely The Taste of an Hilsa and Other Stories (2009) and Tale of a Land (2012).
His translations especially The Taste of an Hilsa is a fine example of a translator assuming the role of a creative writer, exercising his liberty of rewriting in accomplishing the most intriguing task of translation - transportation of ideas from one cultural context to another without distorting the original author's intentions.
Prof. Ratankumar has also presented a paper, 'God in Manipuri Literature' at Oxford Round Table Conference, 2010 and the same has been included in the syllabus of South Texas College, Texas University, the U.S.A.
For his luminary works of literature and for his translation The Taste of an Hilsa and Other Stories, Prof. Thounaojam Ratankumar Singh is conferred with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
