NEFIS WRITES TO MANIPUR CM REGARDING THE PLIGHT OF STRANDED NORTH-EAST WORKERS IN BANGALORE, DELHI, VARIOUS CITIES IN INDIA!
APPEALS TO CM TO PROVIDE RELIEF TO THEM FROM CM RELIEF FUND!
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) today wrote to the Manipur Chief Minister, Shri N Biren Singh regarding the plight of stranded North-east especially Manipuri workers in Bangalore, Delhi and various cities across the country during the lockdown.
It should be noted that the NEFIS had recently launched a helpline for assistance of the North-east people stranded in the country. Following the launch, NEFIS has received calls from workers in various cities.
These workers with their respective families do not have the means to buy subsistence and as such are in a very pathetic condition. The workers are not receiving any wages in the lockdown and have little savings left to last them during the lockdown.
NEFIS had earlier written to the Union Home Ministry regarding the racist attacks being faced by the North-east people during the lockdown. Despite the caution, such attacks are continuing across the country. A Manipuri woman was spat upon at the time of writing of this press release. Such incidents are unfortunate and highlight the widespread bias against North-east people, and as such should be strictly dealt with.
Through the letter, NEFIS earnestly appealed to the CM to see to the plight that the workers are facing in various cities and immediately ensure that they are provided the essentials during the lockdown.
NEFIS also requested the CM to provide them and all such people of Manipur stranded in various cities across India, monetary help from the CM Relied Fund. It has also demanded that the problems of racist attacks on North-east people in the lockdown should be especially dealt with strictly.
NEFIS has also called for donations from civil society to help organize relief for the stranded people of Manipur and North-East during this time of crisis.
