Physics Academy Programme in Nowgong College on October 13, 2018
Physics Academy of North East (PANE) organized a day-long programme on Physics in Nowgong College, Nagaon on October 13, 2018. Prof. B.N. Goswami, the DST-SERB Fellow of Cotton University delivered the PANE lecture on this occasion on the topic A Quiet Revolution in Weather Forecasting’.
In this lecture, Prof. Goswami said that there has been a revolution in weather forecasting in the last sixty years in tropics and extra-tropics. He discussed how this revolutionary development has been materialized across the globe through the faster and most powerful supercomputers. He appreciated the great role played by a plethora of satellites i.e polar-orbiting satellites, geostationary satellites and deep space satellites .for better coverage of atmospheric and oceanic data. This revolution in weather prediction would not have been possible without the superb development in the ocean-atmosphere coupled models that almost accurately describe the physical processes, Prof Goswami added.
He gave a bird’s eye-view of research that was required to achieve this revolution and how precisely numerical calculations done with these models give more than 90% accuracy in within 24 hours weather prediction. Prof Goswami said that the errors involved in these numerically obtained model solutions have decreased significantly during this revolution. The revolution obtained in India’s climate forecast system in the last seven to eight years is to be highly appreciated, he opined.
There was great interaction between the speaker and the huge audience which comprised of large number of PANE Life-members from different parts of North East, students as well as faculty members of different institutions including Arya Vidyapeeth College and Cotton University of Guwahati and the host institution.
Earlier, the programme was inaugurated by Dr Sarat Borkataki, Principal of Nowgong College, where he described how the arrangement of such programme comes out to be extremely helpful for the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Dr. Roshmi Borthakur, Convener of the programme and HOD, Physics thanked the invited speaker and other members of PANE who stepped into Nowgong College to make the programme a grand success.
Prof. Bipul Bhuyan, General Secretary of PANE, in his welcome address, described how PANE has been spearheading the ‘vibrant Physics movement’ to bring Physics education to the grassroots level and promote the basic research in every nook and corner of the North East. He also requested the audience to go through the PANE website to gather more information about the vivacious PANE activity. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Rashmi Rekha Bora, Faculty member of Physics of the Nowgong College.
