During the course of the Annual Meeting there are scientific session, Advanced Cleft Seminar, tour of Washington DC, and an American Presidential dinner. Some of the above programme includes panels, lectures and free papers to foster international exchange of information. It is a proud moment for the state of Manipur that a project being adopted by the Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Langol and has been recognized by the world medical fraternity for its good work and positive result. Smile Train Shija Cleft Project was started on June 2006; it is a collaborative effort of Smile Train Inc., USA and Shija Hospitals and Research Institute. Under Smile Train Shija Cleft Project, patients with Cleft Lip and Palate and related deformities are being treated entirely free of cost. Till date the hospital has performed more than 790 free surgeries since June 2006. Treatments to the needy are given irrespective of the religion, social or the geographical boundary.
For the cleft lip and palate patients coming from Myanmar and neighboring states like Nagaland, Mizoram and Assam, an amount of Rs 750/- to Rs 1000/- are now given as traveling expense. Facilities of free dental consultation, alveolar bone grafting and speech therapy for the cleft patients have been added to the project in 2007. Cleft Lip and Palate Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. Aren’t allowed to attend school or hold a job. And face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache. One cleft is born in every 600 to 800 live births. In India, over 35,000 children are born with cleft lips or palates every year. Many of them do not undergo the treatment because they don’t have the money. Smile Train has come here to help them giving a smile and new life. Smile Train, New York. One Charity. One Problem. One Goal. Focused on a single problem: cleft lip and palate. The Smile Train is an NGO launched in 1998. Goal is to eradicate the global problem of cleft lips and palates. It has got a comprehensive approach - free training for doctors, free surgery for children and research to find a cure. It is supported by thousands of individuals and private foundations and does not receive any governmental funding. Smile Train in India Started late 2000 having 82 'partner' hospitals, 150 surgeons and so far sponsored more than 65,000 cleft surgeries. Shija Hospitals, Langol It is 100 bedded ISO 9001:2000 certified hospital providing secondary and tertiary health care in the region. It is among the 82 partnered hospitals recognized by Smile Train Inc. in India. The hospital has been recognized after satisfying all the parameters being laid down by the Smile Train Inc. keeping in view the quality, infrastructure and world wide acceptable treatment protocols in June 2006 to start a Project to perform 750 surgeries free of cost for Cleft lip, palate & associated problems in 18 months whichever earlier.
