Oh, My Lost Youth
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
My daybreak dream!
It just withered away.
For some living moments
Beauty engulfed me
And I was all smiles after waiting for ages.
It was not just a dream...
It was a dream
At the end of a long, long night.
All my forgotten memories
Childhood dreams not realised
(Ah, hope flamed in me)
And dreams I had as a young man
(My strange weakness for a girl with dark curls)
Kissed the sea of a dream which rippled and sparkled
At the end of a long, long night.
It was a sweet dream
The remnant of a dream
Of another age and time
Quite familiar to me
And it smiled with desire.
The light pinks and yellows of the sunrise
And the smoke greys of the sunset
Rippled my dream at daybreak
And I was all smiles after waiting for ages.
For a few moments
In a dreamlike state between sleeping and waking
I tried to paint my dream
With a broad brush -
All the dots, lines and colours
Did not come to life
And the canvas was empty.
I felt all hollow inside;
I had a premonition
It would wither away
I tried to write down the outline
Before it was forgotten -
Words failed me.
My sweet little dream!
I would not forget it for the world.
I did, and it died young;
I could feel life began to ebb away
And it was a lost fragrance.
Future is dark.
Without any hesitation I can say
The beauty of future is in its being dark
And unknown.
At this rate I fear
Lest I should wake up to my death.
Oh, my sweet little dreams!
When morning woke up at crack of dawn
I lay on the bed benumbed with slumber.
I dreamt.
Yes, I dreamt.
Whatever it is.
And how I wish I should not write
An obituary to my dreams.
